The Holidays are coming up and it’s time to rush-ship those presents that you told everyone was delayed, or the classic “It’s on its way (but I secretly didn’t get you anything).”
I think we’ve all done that at one point or another.
Maybe you already received your ordered gifts and have them wrapped and ready for distribution, or maybe I just reminded you to start shopping. Maybe your money went to super awesome gifts, or maybe you paid those holiday prices for a holiday vacation with the family.
The reality is that the holidays can run the budget a little tight for most people. It may be a good idea to consider taking on a seasonal job, either to get a part-time job and work into a full-time position or just to earn additional income.
Let’s look at 10 great seasonal jobs to make up those holiday expenses:
While events happen all-year-round, there are more during the holidays for family gatherings and office parties. Event planning companies need some extra help during this time; you could join their staff to host, help coordinate, or work as a server during these events.
Human Resources Administrator
HR assistants are always needed, but you could work as a part-time or seasonal HR assistant.
I’m trying to think of something witty to say about HR assistants, but I’ve got nothing…
If you like helping people solve technical issues and need something short-term, then turning to an IT center is a great idea. Technical support, or IT support, are in high demand during the winter months.
If working behind the scenes as part of the event staff doesn’t appeal to you, then maybe being the center of attention at said-event is more your forte. We talked about the number of events increasing during the holiday season, which means that there is also high demand for performers.
The holidays introduce a variety of festive patterns and prints. Of course, there is a lot of demand for different patterns which is why there’s a high demand for people that produce and deliver unique patterns to customers.
Do you remember those horrifying days of applying for colleges and other institutions? Well, those dark days have returned, as they do every year, but you can be the person on the receiving end. Fall through early spring is a busy time for admissions because that’s when they get waives of college applications.
Another upside to working in admissions is that you could “accidentally” drop your unqualified relative’s college application into the “accept” pile… just kidding… or am I?
You can read about my retail days in my blog post “Here’s What’s Wrong With Your Company Culture.”
This one’s more obvious. Retailers are extra needy during the holiday season since stores are cluttered with shoppers.I mean, I went to Sephora at 8:30 p.m. last night, which was a Monday night, and there were still a gazillion people sampling makeup. I tried to quickly grab a lipstick and checkout, but alas, I was also guilty of staying past store hours and swatching (which is the same as sampling for those of you who don’t watch endless makeup tutorials) 12 different shades of red lipstick. I’m sorry, Sephora associates. I shan’t do it again.

I tried to quickly grab a lipstick and check out, but alas, I was also guilty of staying past store hours and swatching (which is the same as sampling for those of you who don’t watch endless makeup tutorials) 12 different shades of red lipstick. I’m sorry, Sephora associates. I shan’t do it again.
But I probably will because I’m hooked on makeup. “V.I.B.” status here.
Christmas Support Elf
If you love kids and love letting parents run away for a few hours to shop, then you can wear an adorable elf costume and work at the mall or at a Christmas event. Malls and events need kid-sitters while parents go off to shop and explore.
I would probably leave my non-existent kid with an elf, then go home and nap.
“Oh, thank you so much for watching my kid! I got so much shopping done!”
Seasonal Retail Visual Merchandiser
This one sounds particularly fun to me since I’m what us marketers call, “a creative.” We know that retail stores are extra busy and needy during the holidays, but you may not know that they also hire temporary people to make the store more festive. So you can “festivize” (I like to coin terms) the store.
“Yes… I want the giant cat in the middle of the store… we have to think about the ambiance we’re setting, people…”
Being a ski instructor is actually a fun opportunity with some cool benefits, such as free lift passes. There are even some ski resorts that provide free or discount lodging during your employment, so you can just pack your bags and spend the holidays skiing.
I remember my first ski trip… I never took a ski lesson and decided to wing it. Well, I was winging it all the way down a blue trail (intermediate trail) and almost off a cliff.
Take the ski lessons, people.
Remember, the scariest moments are the moments right before you check your bank account.
So whether you’re a student who’s trying to earn some Christmas money, or someone who spent too much money on their family vacation, then you should try to recoup your money by working at a seasonal job.
